We welcomed 500 Startups' Singaporean team in 2016 and they rapidly changed the dynamics of our space in Capital Tower. Every one from the team was personable, ambitious, and above all, sociable, casting a jovial mood wherever they were.
As one of the world's most recognized VCs, we have witnessed their portfolio (and team) grow across multiple countries and industries within just a year without a sign of slowing down. Given their amazing track record, we are certain that they will continue to play a monumental role in the startup and tech scene in Southeast Asia in the coming years.
I’m Vishal Harnal, a General Partner at 500 Startups, the most active early-stage venture capital firm in the world. Headquartered in Silicon Valley, 500 has invested in over 1,800 companies across 60 countries from a family of 14 funds over the past 7 years. We are a firm led by entrepreneurs for entrepreneurs and connect talent, opportunity and capital globally.
I'm based in Singapore from where I lead and scale 500's investments and operations across South-East Asia. I invest in the region’s most talented, passionate founders and promising, high-growth startups. Over the past 3 years, we've invested in over 180 companies in the region including flagships Grab, Carousell, Bukalapak, Kudo (acq. Grab), Fave, Nugit and Revolution Pre-crafted.
Prior to joining 500, I was a lawyer at Asia-Pacific's top law firm practicing commercial dispute resolution (specialising in cross-border investor/shareholder disputes). In that role, I advised and represented conglomerates and governments o some of the world's most complex, high-stakes and sensitive commercial and political issues and disputes.
We're a small but very social team that loves being around people and being part of a vibrant community. We also did not want to be burdened with the headache of office/space management. Coworking served both those purposes very well.
Collective Works understood our needs, and more importantly our brand and personalities, better than any other space we were in conversations with. Jonathan and the CW staff made sure that our entry into the space, the design of the space itself and our needs while in the space were and continue to be well looked after.
The diversity of the members and the very work-focused energy of the space really surprised me. It's not a place for idle socialising - it's a place for getting things done.
I really enjoy the Meet the Members events that allow me to connect with other members and yes, I would recommend coworking (and Collective Works) in a heartbeat. The level of care and attention to the design and layout of the space as well as the experience of its residents is unparalleled.
