Luxury Travel: Save as You Splurge

The ‘world is your oyster’ is a phrase that sounds slick on paper, but as you go about taking it seriously, with mountains beckoning and deep seas calling out, the financial reality of it all, affordable or not, slightly jolts you out of that heady explorer fantasy. But fret not amigo, for the only thing you need to realise any dream is that wee bit of intention and a dollop of smartness. So if travelling in style is what makes life worth living for you, here are some great tips that tell you how to make your every travel dream come true sans breaking the bank.

  • Take affordable luxury holidays: In a world where you are paying double for just about everything, this does sound unbelievable. Luxurious holidays can be enjoyed at costs that are nearly half of what meets your eye on the multiple websites of premier hotels and resorts. Check out Luxury Escapes that curates exclusive holidays by collaborating with leading hotels across the world, featuring members-only packages that save you upto 70% on holidays!
  • Know how deals and online bookings work: Cliché perhaps, but saving time is saving money. Avoid taking the pain of searching one site after another and use metasearch engines. They compare multiple sites and give you a whole bunch of options with just one click. And there are more benefits too. Metasearch player, Skyscanner, offers a service like price alerts, where you can key in your route and they track the prices for you. The moment prices drop or rise, you are informed. Convenient, easy, and free. Similarly, signing up for email alerts on Luxury Escapes keeps you abreast of all the latest packages and discounts on offer. Also check airlines’ official websites, that have several ‘sale seasons’ on their many sectors, and send out information on mailers.
  • Plan way ahead: You’ve heard it before, alright. But planning in advance gets a whole new meaning when you are in Asia. Not a land of impromptu holidays, this one. Leaves are applied for, and bookings are done, even before you’ve figured out your long weekend dates. So if do in Rome as the Romans do is the maxim to live by, pick your Christmas destination for the next year-end, in January. This way you avoid paying the last-minute surges in flight prices.
  • Stay flexible: Juggling things at work and home may make it tough for many of us to decide months/weeks in advance. And thankfully the travel industry hears us. Luxury Escapes for instance allows you to book a ‘deal’ package now, giving you the flexibility to pick your dates later, using their ‘buy now, book later’ option. Take that, kiasu travellers!
  • There is a best time to book: No internet magic here, just plain numbers that study patterns and use analytics to tell you the best time to book for your holiday. Sunday works best and it’s ideal to get that done 21 days before you head out.

There are some obvious ones of course, like avoid flying out on Friday nights, and choosing to return on Mondays over Sundays.  And going by how early long weekend bookings are made in Singapore and the region, you are best to avoid the rush altogether, choosing an ‘off-season’ weekend to head out on a holiday.
  • Be adventurous: We all like to tick-off our bucket list every year. Dinner at the Eiffel and breakfast overlooking the Thames. But, it is now the day and age to find your own little countryside taverns or explore Thailand during the rains. Yes! Go off-beat and off-season to have travel experiences that are more local and authentic. And while you’re at it, enjoy the savings by avoiding peak season travel.
  • Use your credit cards wisely: A traveller at heart with bags always packed? Then it is time you look at your wallet a lot more closely. Of course, you should have the money to go travelling (!!), but also the right credit cards to travel in style. From free limousine services, to privileged access to lounges across the airports, the right credit card can get you some rather exclusive deals.
  • Rake up miles and loyalty points: Being a smart traveller means being prudent enough to rake up miles and points, through loyalty to an airline or hotel chain. For example, Singapore Airline’s KrisFlyer programme allows you to earn miles not only from them but even their 200 partner airlines. It is also prudent to choose a credit card that helps you bring in more miles home.

Go for the American Express Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer Ascend Credit Card that offers you 1.2 KrisFlyer miles for every S$1 spent on retail purchases or Citi PremierMiles Visa Card that gives you 10,000 Citi Miles on payment of annual fees. Other options include the DBS Altitude Visa Signature credit card, the Standard Chartered Visa Infinite credit card among others.  If you are smart about it, you can actually rake up enough miles to get free flights to anywhere in the world
  • Go local: While travelling, go by this mantra — the locals know it best. After getting the best deal on flights, stay and what-have-you, once you are in the destination, it is best to seek out local advice about things to do, places to eat, etc. You can reach out to concierge services at your hotels, or sign up on specific websites that get you a local expert. You will find the best experiences the place can offer

In summary, just putting in a little bit of effort looking at the right resources before booking your travel can help take your money further. It just means you can take more frequent or longer trips with the same budget. Here’s to happy travels!
